Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14) Why is anointing folks with oil connected to the laying on of hands and healing prayer?
To begin with this is what Jesus instructed his disciples to do when He sent them to “do the stuff” that He did:
Jesus sent His disciples out two by two, to “to do the stuff” that He did. “And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.” Mark 6:12,13
An article by Dr. James K. Wagner reminded me that anointing a person with the sign of the cross is a “sacramental symbol” that invokes the healing love of God – it points to and connects with the presence of the healing Christ and the inward ministry of the Holy Spirit.
In the Catechism of the The Book Of Common Prayer the anointing with oil with the laying on of hands is referred to as a “Sacramental Rite”, and therefore is means for conveying God’s grace of healing.
Here’s what the Book Of Common Prayer in the section MINISTRATION TO THE SICK has to say:
If oil for the Anointing of the Sick is to be blessed, the Priest says
O Lord, holy Father, giver of health and salvation: Send your
Holy Spirit to sanctify this oil; that, as your holy apostles
anointed many that were sick and healed them, so may those
who in faith and repentance receive this holy unction be
made whole; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
And as we anoint someone – “As you are outwardly anointed with this holy oil, so may our heavenly Father grant you the inward anointing of the Holy Spirit.”
God Bless. DHP
